Ronnie Wood has revealed that he secretly battled cancer for the second time during lockdown.
The 73 year old was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive case of small-cell cancer, just three years after beating lung cancer.
Small-cell cancer is most common in the lungs, but can also affect the prostate, pancreas, bladder or lymph nodes.
Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie has now had the all-clear for the second time, and says working on paintings of his 43 year old wife Sally and their four year old twins has helped to keep him strong.
He also credits staying sober for the past decade and putting his fate in the hands of a “higher power” helped him to fight the illness.
Ronnie told The Sun: “I’ve had cancer two different ways now. I had lung cancer in 2017 and I had small-cell more recently that I fought in the last lockdown. I came through with the all-clear.
“I’m going through a lot of problems now, but throughout my recovery, you have to let it go. And when you hand the outcome over to your higher power, that is a magic thing.
“That brings you back to the (AA and NA’s) Serenity Prayer: ‘Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change’. That’s incredible. What will be will be, it’s nothing to do with me.
“All I can do is stay positive in my attitude, be strong and fight it, and the rest is up to my higher power.”
Discussing how art helped him during his recovery from the disease, he continued: “Art therapy was self-imposed in a way, especially in lockdown.
“The art has got me through it — to express and get lost. I’ve done so much work.
“I use my photographic memory more when it comes to painting the twins. I’d be painting them all the time if I could, but it’s amazing to be with them and just observe, soak it in that way.
“The twins are such a blessing. Gracie is like my mum reincarnated, her nature, her figure, the way she sits and handles herself.
“She lets Alice run and do all the athletic stuff, and Grace just sits there and observes the situation.”
Theatre producer Sally gave birth to the twins in 2016, when Ronnie was 69 years old.
He is also father to Jesse, 44, Leah, 42, Tyrone, 37, and adopted father to Jamie, 46, who he shares with second wife Jo Wood.
