Olivia Colman fell in love with her actor husband the moment she saw him – so she spent six weeks “stalking him” and learning the lyrics to his favourite songs – and it paid off
Olivia Colman might be one of the most famous actresses to come from Blighty, but she’s very private when it comes to her personal life.
The Peep Show star, who won an Oscar for her role as Queen Anne in The Favourite, has been married for 20 years.
And despite spending two decades with her husband, 47-year-old Olivia still believes she is “punching above her weight”.
Olivia met Ed Sinclar when they were both in the Footlights acting troupe at Cambridge University – and for her, it was love at first sight.
While they were both rehearsing for a production of Table Manners, Olivia spent six weeks memorising the lyrics to the songs he liked, and his timetable, before professing her love for him through a mutual friend.
“I sort of stalked him. Which I don’t condone. It did work in our case,” she admitted.
“I remind him every day that he is a very lucky man.
“I took three hours to get dressed every day. He was not aware of what was going on.
“Eventually I just told his friend to tell him I loved him and eventually his friend did.”
Olivia has previously told The Telegraph: “It sounds really odd, but I did fall in love with him at first sight.
“When he walked into the room, I just went, ‘That’s him!’ Mind you, I suppose if he hadn’t wanted me, then I might have gone, ‘That’s him!’ at someone else a week later.”
She added: “He was gorgeous, the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen.
“I stuck with him and made him realise he could only be happy with me. I still feel like I’m punching above my weight.”
But her ‘stalking’ strategy worked, and the pair have been together ever since, also welcoming three children, whose identities have been kept private.
You might recognise Ed from BBC TV series Look Around You, in which he played Michael the Butler.
But he’s also a writer and producer – and worked on Olivia’s new Sky thriller Landscapers, which he said he wrote just for her.
“From the outset it was very much conceived as an Olivia Colman vehicle, I was looking to write something for her, so that was definitely in play,” Ed told Yahoo!.
Every marriage has its secrets – and Olivia’s is no different.
She recently revealed she didn’t tell Ed for a whole six months when she decided to get Botox.
“I have done Botox and I LOVED it [but] I’ve done it when I know there is a big gap [between roles],” she told The Times.
She added how she managed to keep the anti-wrinkle booster under wraps from Ed, explaining: “I didn’t tell my husband and then for about six months he kept saying, ‘Hello, pretty!'”
Olivia then told that after her husband continued to shower compliments on her, she admitted she’d had Botox and he “found it hilarious”.
Ed supported Olivia through a heartbreaking time in 2020 when she lost her father.
The Broadchurch star wept on stage as she collected her Emmy Award for her portrayal of the Queen in Netflix’s The Crown.
“Thank you very much. I’d have put money on that not happening,” said Olivia, who appears on Graham Norton on Friday.
“I don’t know what to say. Thank you very much for this, this is amazing.
“What a lovely end to the most extraordinary journey with this lovely family. I’ve loved every second of it and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
“I’m going to be very quick as I’m very teary, as I wish my dad was here to see this,” the actress admitted, choking up with tears before regaining her composure.
“I lost my daddy during Covid, and he would have loved all of this,” she told viewers at home.
She ended her speech on a lighter note, praising fellow Brit and award-winner Michaela Coel by declaring: “Michaela Coel – f**k yeah!”
