Kim Kardashian spoke of her joy as Julius Jones’ life was spared at the last minute as a governor commuted his death sentence
Kim Kardashian has revealed she spent “most of my day” on the phone to a prisoner who had his death sentence commuted at the last minute.
The reality TV star, 41, has been a long-time advocate for getting Julius Jones’ execution commuted and would have been overjoyed at the decision on Thursday.
The inmate has been on Death Row for 20 years after being charged in 2002 with killing 45-year-old businessman Paul Howell.
His family and a host of famous faces who had petitioned to have his sentence changed were celebrating after Oklahoma Governor, Kevin Stitt, commuted Jones’ sentence to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The governor wrote on Twitter : “After prayerful consideration and reviewing materials presented by all sides of this case, I have determined to commute Julius Jones’ sentence to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.”
And the SKIMS founder also took to social media to share her glee with her followers, revealing she had spent “most of my day” speaking to Julius ahead of the overturn.
She wrote on Twitter: “He also wanted me to pass a few messages along that were really important to him. The most important is that you have to always make sure you are doing the right thing.
“Julius was hanging out with the wrong crowd and that landed him in the position he’s in today.”
She expanded her thoughts on her Instagram Story, reaching out to the governor to express her thanks at the decision.
She continued to say that while the decision is brilliant, Julius is still on no-contact visits so he hasn’t been able to hug family members.
And she shared another message of his: “He said if you are doing something your mom wouldn’t approve of then you shouldn’t be doing it. It’s that simple!”
Later in the day, Kim shared a video of a news update surrounding the case and once again thanked everyone who worked to make it happen.
She said: “It’s so nice for people to understand that this isn’t about politics, sometimes this is just about the people.
“To see everyone from the right and the left come together is a beautiful thing.”
Other celebrities who had been fighting Julius’ corner included actresses Viola Davis and Kerry Washington.
Both took to social media to praise the decision, but said there is still a lot more needs to be done.
