Kate Garraway has shared an update on how life at home has been since her husband Derek Draper returned.
Derek, 53, was admitted to hospital in March 2020 after showing symptoms of coronavirus. He was put into an induced coma to help his recovery and woke up for the first time in October last year to tell doctors he was in pain.
The deadly bug “attacked everything”, leaving him with kidney failure, damage to his liver and pancreas, as well as heart failure after beating the virus.
Now, hosting Good Morning Britain alongside 50 year old Susanna Reid, Kate has revealed having her other half home is similar to bringing a newborn baby back and not knowing what to do next.
The 53 year old said: “Derek came home Wednesday evening and yes it’s extraordinary and we sort of feel over the moon and overwhelmed in equal measure. It is quite an overwhelming responsibility.”
Kate, who transformed her house for her husband with a wet room and widened doors, continued: “I do remember the day we first brought home your firstborn and you’ve been sort of planning for nine months and you think, ‘What the heck do we do now?’
“It’s a little bit like that feeling. You suddenly find it’s half four and you’ve still got your pyjamas on.
“It’s been completely overwhelming but wonderful.”
Susanna then said: “One of the most important things about him coming home was that he could be surrounded by you and his family and children of course,” before asking: “How are the children enjoying having dad back?”
Kate, who shares daughter Darcey, 15, and 11 year old Billy, replied: “Oh it’s amazing. It was a medical reason for coming home as well as obviously our desire and I’m sure his desire too, to try and encourage a more normal environment to stimulate his recovery and cognition and consciousness. And they’ve been absolutely lovely and they’re really helpful.

“It’s been great actually. I’ve noticed a little bit of deferring, ‘Shall we check with dad?’ and it’s like, ‘Hang on a minute, I’m still the boss!’ Though I think Darcey has always been the boss actually.”
Kate then explained that they have around the clock care as well as an “alarm system”, where Derek can alert his family and support if he needs them by pressing a button with his right hand.
She then assured viewers that there are people with him as she presents the ITV show as she said: “I haven’t just said, ‘Bye! You’ve had your time now!'”
The TV personality went on to explain that they’ve already seen a bit of improvement in him since he’s been home.
She added: “Already we’ve had a couple of little lovely moments where he has sort of reacted to something Darcey’s said in a way that we haven’t seen previously where things had stalled.
“I don’t want to get my hopes up too much but at the moment it feels like the right move.”
