Charlotte Hawkins has spoken out on the one time she met the late Prince Philip at the age of 10, who told her to “move to the side”.
Appearing on Good Morning Britain on Friday morning with co-host Ben Shephard, the 45 year old explained how she met him at the Maundy service back in 1986.
However, it wasn’t what she expected it would be as the Duke of Edinburgh told her at the time to shuffle to the side as she was in danger of blocking Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in photos.
“I met him actually when I was 10 years old back in 1986,” she started before Ben, 46, chimed in: “When you were 10 years old Charlotte? You were always destined for glory, weren’t you?”
Clearly in disbelief, Ben continued: “10 years old! I’m trying to figure out what I was doing at 10 years old and it wasn’t meeting anyone Royal. Oh my goodness.”
Charlotte then recalled: “Back in that moment, I was one of the children who was handing out flowers to the Queen at the Maundy service. I had a bit of a different haircut.”
A photo was then shown on screen where the Queen can be seen dressed in a navy blue coat with a matching hat as she stands next to Prince Philip, who wears a black suit and tie.
In front of them can be seen a line of children consisting of two little boys dressed in suits alongside two girls.
Charlotte, who previously said her marriage has strengthened due to the coronavirus lockdowns, is seen standing directly in front of the Queen and Prince Philip as she wears a black suit with a green tie.
She sports a short haircut with a side-parting as she smiles for the camera while holding a bouquet of white and yellow flowers in her hands.
Gesturing towards the girl in the middle, Charlotte said: “That’s me, that’s me there, yeah.”
Surprised, Ben then said: “I thought that was you with the glasses,” to which Charlotte responded: “I look like a boy? Is that what you’re saying?”
She continued: “I am one of those children in there anyway, that’s me. My ear is sticking out actually, which obviously delighted me in all the official photos. It was 1986.
“And the thing is, you look at that photo there and the Duke of Edinburgh actually put his hand on my shoulder to speak to me and I was completely awe struck that he was speaking to me.
“The words he uttered were, ‘You’re going to need to move to the side because you’re in danger of blocking the Queen in the photo.’”
Charlotte, who recently narrowly avoided a wardrobe malfunction as her dress blew in the wind, added: “I was quite tall for a 10 year old and the Queen’s not that tall, is she?”
“‘Step aside,’” Ben said as he giggled. “You really are taking her limelight.”
